Tori had her last game tonignt. She has had a blast playing Baseball this Summer and being the only girl on her team! She has had a great encouraging coach who really loves the game and he has been really great for Tori! She has fallen in love with the sport and hopes to play again and again. Tonight she told her coach she wanted to do something hard and she asked if she could play catcher. It was the last inning of the game and here comes Tori strutting out in full catching gear ready to try out a position she has never even practiced once. Everyone was watching and enjoying her genuine effort and desire to try this out! She did amazing. She caught the ball in her glove several times when the batter had swung the bat...this is especially amazing to me. This would not have been a position that I would have volunteered for, but Tori loved it. Once the ball smacked her in the leg and left a mark. Tonight that mark was a symbol of sacrifice for the game that brought a smile to her face. We are so proud of Tori!!! Timo is in his uniform in this picture just because he wanted to wear it!! Sometime last year while sitting at my desk I began to feel excited. No, it wasnt because my new pair of jeans was slightly too tight and applying too much pressure on my prostate. It was because I realized how exciting of a sports year 2006 was going to be. Besides the usual great events such as the Super Bowl and March Madness there was also the World Cup of Soccer and Olympic Hockey to look forward to. But just when I thought it couldnt get any better than that, the powers that be added the World Cup of Baseball, or the World Baseball Classic as I later found it to be named. Three huge global events in a matter of 6 months with March Madness sprinkled in the middle, how can you top that? Well that was then, and this is now.
In reality, I have no one to blame but myself for the let down that I have come to experience. How could I have been so stupid? I mean, surely I should have realized that Bud Selig was running the show and that doom was certainly impending. It may look all well and good now, but here are ten reasons why I wont be watching the World Baseball Calamity, err, Classic.
10. No Yankee pitchers will be allowed to pitch. There is no way that Steinbrenner is going to risk his investments and allow his pitchers to participate in this tournament. Chin Ming Wong is currently listed on the roster of Chinese Taipei, but look for that to change in the next month as they trim rosters from 60 to 30 (this will be a recurring theme throughout the countdown).
9. Chinese Taipei. Just the fact that Chinese Taipei has a team in this thing makes me question its very fabric. Im not exactly sure yet if this is a real country, or just a made up land where every Asian with a hyphenated name was forced to migrate to.
8. Mike Piazza playing for Italy. Give me a break. If youre going to allow a country to play in the WBC then at least let them lose with their own players. Putting a future hall of famer in their lineup just because his name ends in a vowel seems a little vulgar to me.
7. South Africa. Check out the teams that have been slated in Team USAs pool: Canada, Mexico, and South Africa? Its one thing to throw this country into the WBC mix, which joins China as being the only teams with a roster that lacks a player who plays on a current major league team, but to put them in a pool with the other North American countries just to give USA one less challenge? Seems pretty obvious to me whats going on here, not to mention pathetic.
6. Players choosing their country. One of the things that was an initial draw for me was that, being called the World Baseball Classic, I assumed I would be watching the best that each country had to offer while they battled it out against each other. Well, apparently baseball players get to choose where they would like to have been born, and then play for that country. Besides Piazza playing for Italy, you have As pitchers Kirk Saarloos and Danny Haren joining former As pitcher Mark Mulder on the Netherlands (and after all, Mark Mulder was in fact born in South Holland, Illinois, which, besides the fact that the city contains the word Holland in it, is practically right next door to the Netherlands), and American born Nomar Garciaparra is playing for Mexico (although Michael Young who is half Mexican is playing for Team USA). You also have Alex Rodriguez playing for the Dominican Republic, but then not playing at all, and now apparently playing for the US, even though both the Dominican and US rosters list him as a player for their team. My guess is that by next week he may just decide to play for a World Series of Poker bracelet. While theyre at it they might as well let Barry Bonds play for South Africa. The list goes on and on, which once again shows that this tournament has little to do with national pride, and a lot to do with the financial gain of major league baseball.
5. Drug Testing. Because of the strict Olympic style drug testing, you will be sure to see many more players for the US and other countries drop out of this just as Barry Bonds did. Bonds, who is once again under the delusion that people actually think he is clean, first said he would be honored to play for his country, but recently dropped out, citing the fact that he wants to take more time to rest his knees. Interestingly, he had ample opportunity to announce this in front of the large number of media that was in attendance during a recent celebrity golf tournament Bonds attended, but he instead chose to make the announcement via his web site where he of course is able to avoid any questions that people may want to ask of him. Look for other big names, most notably Roger Clemens, to drop off the roster before they go from 60 to 30 in the next month for similar reasons. The fact is that MLBs drug testing policy is a joke, and no urine test is going to come close to detecting HGH or anything else that has been newly developed. Even some blood tests will not detect the new designer steroids out there, but it does increase the chance that you will get exposed. However, that is another discussion for another day.
4. All about the money. Lets face it; the only reason that we are even talking about the World Baseball Classic is because Major League Baseball wants to generate more revenue. Just look at the adds throughout MLB.com. They are even using guilt in order to sell tickets, such as Your favorite players are supporting their countries. Now its your turn to support yours. Give me a break. Kind of funny how the rosters are still at 60 players. Wouldnt it be funny it right after the tickets were sold out they just happened to cut the rosters down to 30, and all the players you wanted to decided they didnt want to play in March and risk injury? Interesting how that works out.
3. Pitch Counts and Mercy Rules. You heard me right, the WBC has set pitch counts for each round of the World Baseball Classic. For the first round it is set at 65 pitches, and it increases to a whopping 80 pitches in the second round and 95 pitches for the semis and finals. Apparently if a pitcher reaches 65 pitches in the midst of an at bat he may finish out that batter, which begs the question does a pitcher who is coming up on his 64th pitch try even harder to throw a strike, regardless of the count, in order to force the batter to make contact in the hope of being able to face one last batter? Talk about changing the way players play the game! They also adopted a mercy rule of 15 runs after 5 innings or 10 runs after 7 in order to end blowouts in a timelier manner. If I wanted to watch little league baseball I would wait until the summer time.
2. March Madness. Talk about poor planning. The WBC takes place smack dab in the middle of March, right during the peak of college basketballs tournament season. Last year baseball tried to upstage the NCAA with their steroid hearings, and now this? Nice try Bud.

Sure he got lucky with realignment, the wild card, and interleague play (which by now has kind of lost its luster), but any moron who just happened to be the commissioner during the 90s would have come up with the same ideas. It was just a matter of time. He single handedly made football the most popular sport in America, and let the issue of steroids run amuck in the world of baseball. Say what you will about George W. Bush, but at least he surrounds himself with competent people. Seligs cronies are just as clueless as he is. Once again Selig is proving that hes just about putting money in the pockets of his owners, and that he will continue to milk the fans for all they are worth.
So before you tune in to see just what the World Baseball Classic has to offer, remember these ten things I have laid before you. Dont make the same mistake you did last year and miss some exciting college hoops because you want to see how uncomfortable some congressmen can make Mark McGwire and Donald Fehr look. Watch something that really matters, not spring training baseball masquerading as the real thing.

Some clients come to me complaining about their glove being limp or floppy, and most of the time thats because the plastic inserts that are in the thumb and pinkie padding have broken. I make a new plastic insert and bingo, that problem is solved Ive put the snap back in their old glove.
Many of my clients have been using their glove for 10, 20, 30 years or more and would not dream of buying a new one. Maybe it was a special gift, or maybe it was handed down from father to son, or maybe they wore that glove in a championship game, or it has some other special memory associated with it. A lot of times, my custom strengthening jobs are brand new gloves that have barely been broken in - the owner likes the feel and look of the new glove, but not the strength, toughness or durability. What I do to strengthen a glove is add laces as needed to the webbing or pocket area, by either doubling or tripling the existing lacing, or adding a new lace course (and making holes as necessary). When I custom strengthen a glove, I imagine how strong I would want the glove to be if I had to catch Randy Johnson fastballs!
Another type of customization I am frequently asked to do is adding a lace run through the four fingers of an infielders or outfielders glove (catchers glove and first basemans gloves dont have fingers). In most gloves, there is only one run of lacing connecting the fingers (criss-crossing at the very top of the glove). Some high-end gloves have a second lace run connecting the four fingers about midway up the fingers between the palm and the top finger lace. This second finger lace run adds a little strength, but more than that it helps a glove hold its form and shape.Gloves that I have custom strengthened or added a new lace run though the fingers serve a functional purpose plus they look great! The owner has increased confidence in his ability to catch anything and everything that comes his way, and he also can proudly show off his customized, individualized glove.

The Persian Gulf War was mercifully short, but during its six-week duration sports administrators drew up contingency plans for shorter seasons, reduced rosters and other expedients that would allow them to carry on in a time of conflict. S1F: Who is the toughest pitcher you’ve ever faced?
BB: In my first spring training, I faced Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett on back-to-back days. I had just been drafted and I was at my first spring training, and there I was facing those two guys. BB: I probably wouldn’t want to face Daniel Haigwood, because he’s going to stay away with fastballs and then come at you with a huge curveball. And I would say Daniel Bard, too – because he can mix a 99 mph fastball with a 79 mph curveball and that will mess you up, so he probably wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun to face either.
But with that said, all of these guys do an outstanding job and I wouldn’t want to ruffle any feathers by naming one guy and not naming someone else.
S1F: When you were called up to Double-A, did you find consistency in instruction between Single-A and Double-A?
BB: Yeah. The people in the organization talk a lot about “the Red Sox way”… since Theo’s been in charge I think that approach has been incorporated at every level. This is only my third full year so I don’t know how it was previously, but from my standpoint I think things are very consistent. From the big league club down you can see it… it’s about being selectively aggressive getting a good pitch to hit and getting on base. Nobody runs a whole lot and nobody bunts a whole lot, but you’ll see a lot of walks and a high on-base-percentage and lots of pitches per at-bat. That’s part of what they call ‘the Red Sox way” and what they’re trying to incorporate from their youngest guys all the way up to the big league level.
S1F: A lot of these guys have a story about Lancaster – about the wind or what have you. Do you have a favorite Lancaster story?
BB: Yeah, I do, but it wasn’t about something that happened on the field. It’s about something that happened coming back from a road trip. I was walking up to the front of the bus to put a movie into the CD player, which is always right at the front of the bus by the steps. Just at that moment, our bus driver was about to miss our exit and so he tapped on the brakes. I went forward and thought I was going to step on the floor but I was at the steps…
I went down the steps and hit the windshield, putting a huge spider crack in the windshield. I almost went through it. Chad Epperson (the manager in Lancaster) grabbed me, pulled me back and threw me towards the back of the bus. He said something like “I’ll get fired if something like that happens”.
It scared me to death at the time, but looking back it was hilarious.
S1F: In the movie “For the Love of the Game”, Kevin Costner’s character talks about “clearing the mechanism”. Do you have a routine for clearing the mechanism?
BB: Yeah. (My routine) starts on deck.
I’ll take a few deep breaths in the on-deck circle and visualize a line drive over the shortstop’s head – that keeps me from getting into pull mode and trying to yank the ball out.
As I walk up to the plate, I concentrate on getting my foot down and getting everything done in time… and then it’s just a matter of getting a good pitch to hit and staying in the middle of the field. I’m not trying to guess what he’s going to throw, though there are times when I’m struggling that I’ll try to guess pitches… but when I’m locked in and swinging the bat well, I’m not thinking of anything except getting everything done in time, getting a good pitch and going up the middle.
And that has to do with the consistency we were talking about earlier, always going back to the same approach and the same fundamentals whether things are good or bad.
S1F: What is your favorite thing about being on a baseball field?
BB: Oh, being around the guys. You know, by the end of the season you can be really tired of some of them sometimes, but two weeks into the off-season and I’m ready to be back around them again. We have so much fun.
And obviously, I love the competition – I love to compete and I love to win. And especially in the upper levels with the larger crowds, who wouldn’t want to get out there and play in front of thousands of people…
S1F: Is there a least favorite thing about being on the field?
BB: I can’t think of one thing. I mean, going through the grind of the season can wear on you, but I’ll tell you what – I’d rather run out to center field and (run through drills) and take infield as opposed to being in an office with a 9-5 job. I love every minute of my job and I really don’t want to imagine doing anything else.
S1F: Last question… if I say the name of a few of your current and former teammates, please say the first word that pops into your head: Justin Masterson?
BB: Dominant.
S1F: Michael Bowden?
BB: Bulldog… competitor.

RT Staff Note: The following story is real folks. I wouldn't make this stuff up. The City of Beachwood a close by suburb of Cleveland, has decided to break tradition and cancel a Little League All-Star game for children ages 9-12.

In March, Beachwood Mayor Merle Gordon sent a letter to parents of children involved in the Little League program stating the city was canceling the All-Star game based on information provided in an article written by the founder of the National Alliance for Youth Sports, Fred Engh. Wacky Freddy has been advocating positive and safe sports for children since 1981.

In his article, Freddy states..."Theres nothing like sticking a dagger into a youngsters self-esteem the first season he plays the sport by letting him know that hes not good enough or considered worthy to be part of this elite group of teammates. Thats not the message we want to send to children who are already less active and more obese than any previous generation in history."

Hmmmm....so just because Tommy is obese, you punish Timmy who works his butt off? Wow...we just don't get this at all. Hey parents, if your kid is obese...turn off the TV, limit video game usage, quit buying Ding Dongs and let your kid explore a real world out doors rather than the virtual one he thinks he lives on Playstation.

According to Mayor Gordon, so far, he has received nearly no opposition to the cancellation of the game. It must be noted that we tried to call the mayors office and there was no answer. That could explain the opposition thing. Either that or the parents and kids were too busy indoors playing the latest Halo video game.

However, there is hope in this Rock and Roll Town. In a poll conducted by My Fox Cleveland over 983 votes were cast and 84% stated that "Kids Should be Rewarded for Their Play." Only 9% thought that the decision boosted self esteem. Maybe Mayor Gordon was too busy clicking the "boost self esteem" poll button to answer the phone, because we can't see why anyone would think that this decision is even remotely close to sane.

"The goal of the youth programs is to introduce the concept of teamwork, provide instruction and foster the love of the game." said Mayor Gordon in a Fox News interview. HUH? Ok, Mayor...we get that...Did you get that statement off of the Little League Web site? What does that have to do with the decision to cancel the games though? And why is a mayor involved in this decision? Is this really his call? Shouldn't the Little League national organization have a say?

Personally, we think that the low self esteem comes from living in the Cleveland area and has nothing to do with All Star games. This decision is the true Mistake By The Lake. OK, that was a joke...kind of...The Cleveland metro area isn't exactly the hotbed of youth baseball. This isn't that big of a loss for them. Now try to ban All-Star games in California, Florida, Georgia or Texas and see what happens. This decision just proves that we are turning into a world of softies and whiny non-winners. We don't think we should ban All Star Games at all. We think sports should BAN:

1. Trophies for everyone...We hate that and always have. If a player or his team didn't earn a trophy based on performance, they don't deserve one. Earning a trophy for mediocrity just teaches more mediocrity and breeds spoiled children and attitudes of entitlement.

2. Talent that is spread out evenly. The democratic system of Little League destroys Little League....thus the flight to more and more travel teams. The best players should all play on the best teams and leagues...The middle of the road/developing players should play in another league and so on. This promotes more playing time for all players. A kid with little or no athletic ability gets to play with others of alike ability...with the key word being PLAY! Birds of a feather flock together. It works. Everyone plays...no one gets teased or sits the bench. The better players develop along with other better players, making them....better. The second tier players on the other leagues also benefit from more playing time and also get the opportunity to get better and play in their own All-Star games. You promote self esteem by playing. If there are still bruised egos in this system...well...maybe sports isn't their calling. And that's OK. Sports is not the end-all for a majority of players. But at least this system rewards players for excelling and playing well with players of their own ability. More kids get a chance to play in All Star Games...It may not appease Freddy, but it's the right thing to do.

The bottom line is that sports and especially baseball is about successes AND failure. We think it's worse that a league or Mayor punishes its good players and denies them a chance to show off their talents at an All Star Game. We don't care if they are 9 or 19...players that earned accolades should be celebrated and honored.

If I were that mediocre player that wouldn't have had a chance to make an All-Star team...I'd feel terrible for my team mate that worked hard and earned a shot at fame to only have it denied. Was Pavlov that off base? You work hard, you get rewarded. That's the American way.

Sir Winston Churchill once said, "Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm." Yet if these kids are all treated equally, how will they ever learn what failure or success is?

The familiar sights and sounds of spring are just around the corner--birds chirping, flowers blooming and millions of parents cheering on children participating in organized baseball and softball programs nationwide.

Yet alarmingly, many kids experiences will be sabotaged when that nasty storm cloud--the All-Star selection process--rolls through. That ridiculous time of the year when ego-driven coaches and parents begin puffing their chests out a little more at the ballpark, and talks shift to how their child is All-Star worthy because of their ability to throw harder or hit better than their teammates.

Granted, there are endless issues that todays parks and recreation professionals must deal with while orchestrating programs, but it has baffled me for decades that this topic continues to be ignored season after season.

A Bruised Ego
Theres nothing like sticking a dagger into a youngsters self-esteem the first season he plays the sport by letting him know that hes not good enough or considered worthy to be part of this elite group of teammates. Thats not the message we want to send to children who are already less active and more obese than any previous generation in history.

Just think for a moment how preposterous All-Star games are, especially in T-ball or beginning-level programs. In kindergarten classrooms across the country, do we take the kids who are learning letters and numbers quicker than their classmates and announce that these kids are special and give them extra attention and cool extracurricular activities to participate in? Of course not! That would destroy the others confidence and make them feel insignificant.

So why do administrators continue to allow these senseless games to be played at their facilities? Just because theyve been conducted for decades doesnt mean thats the blueprint for the future.

All-Star games make about as much sense as taking a vegetarian to a fancy steakhouse, or hitting an all-you-can-eat buffet with a friend who is struggling to stick to a diet.

All-Star games should be benched for several reasons:

It doesnt take much to figure out that kids who mature quicker than others are going to be stronger, faster and probably more productive on the field. So, were simply recognizing players whose bodies have developed faster in many cases.

The entire process is twisted. Id love to know the percentage of kids who are chosen for these All-Star teams who have a parent involved in coaching. Mom or Dad justify choosing their own child--even if hes clearly not one of the better players--because theyve surrendered a lot of their free time to volunteer to coach.

The injury factor. Stress fractures, trips to specialists and surgeries come into play when these seasons are extended with extra games and practices. They take a toll on young bodies and lead to an avalanche of overuse injuries.

On top of all this, the National Standards for Youth Sports state that leagues should not engage in choosing post-season All-Star teams. The standards were put together by some of the nations top recreation professionals and are the true voice of reason when it comes to youth sports.

Take The Initiative
The solution is clear and simple--ban All-Star games. Singling out players for these teams smothers the purpose of recreational youth sports leagues, where the emphasis should be on participation and learning.

Yes, many parents nationwide will no doubt cringe at this stance because All-Star games are a great source of pride when a child earns that distinction, but the kids could care less. What 5 year old, who cant even tie his shoes yet, gains any extra satisfaction from being chosen for these teams?

Ill bet your recreation department is involved in All-Star games in some way. If you dont step forward to push for change, who will?

If youre feeling reluctant to do something, consider all the children who feel hurt, left out and embarrassed by being passed over every season.

Youth sports arent meant to single out only a handful of kids; theyre about making every child feel special, including those who wont make the All-Star team.

During my conversation with him, he told me that he met some older Chinese men at one of the games hed attended. Baseballs were considered expensive, and at three dollars each, generally only one ball was used per game. The hardness and aerodynamics of the ball were poor by modern standards and thus the sphere was detrimental to a hitters success.
In general terms, even though the ball was by most accounts, it actually did not provide a huge advantage to either offense or defense. The ball could not be hit for great distance, but the poor condition of the ball decreased the speed while increasing the movement of the pitch, thus making it somewhat easier for the hitters to make contact. Hit balls did not generate the tremendous speed off the bat as in todays game. This benefited the defenders in the field. Balls were only replaced if they were hit into the stands and lost. There were not many long-ball hitters and short game strategy was common, although some sources say that strategy as a whole was lacking in the Dead Ball Era, which may have further added to a lack of offensive production.
The rule was installed in 1901 in the National League and 1903 in the American, whereas hitters were charged with their first two strikes on foul balls. The new rule benefited pitchers and cause offensive output to decline further. It also remained legal to throw spit balls, and although illegal, defacing the ball in some way was a very common practice. Consequently, as you might expect with these conditions, hitting a soft, wet, and usually defaced ball resulted in may singles and fewer doubles, triples and homers.
Dividing pitching responsibility among a larger bullpen also became trendy, as did the sacrifice bunt. Both of these strategies had a detrimental effect as well on a hitters overall performance. Strangely, there were some legendary record setting hitters from this era, most notably, Ty Cobb. Hailing from Georgia, his nickname was the Georgia Peach, Cobb was best known for his pinpoint hitting accuracy and his never-say-die stubborn character. He set the record for career batting average at .366 and for runs scored with 2,245; both marks still stand to this day. He also finished his career first in hits; this record stood until the mid-1980s when Pete Rose broke the record. In 1936, Ty Cobb became the very first inductee of baseballs Hall of Fame, earning 222 out of 226 votes.
During the Dead Ball Era, managers relied on defensive strategy much more than offensive strategy. It was said, you could shake a tree and find a bat, but finding a glove was a whole different matter. Offensive skills were not highly sought after by managers. The focus was on defense. Some critics argue that baseballs probably were not the cause of low scoring, given there was no change in the balls construction between the high scoring 1890s and the low scoring 1900s. The 1894 season saw the highest offensive totals in runs scored ever recorded in the National League. The construction of the ball was changed in 1911 in an attempt to make the ball livelier and to increase scoring. The balls were corked for the first time. And yet, the Dead ball Era continued for another eight years-until 1919.
In 1908, an incident occurred in the National League that has come to be widely known as the Merkle Incident. It occurred during a regular season meeting between the Giants and the Cubs, In a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, runners on first and third, a single hit by Al Bridwell apparently won the game for the Giants as the runner scored from third. However, Fred Merkle was on first and ran to the clubhouse instead of advancing to second base, partly because the fans were mobbing the field at the Polo Grounds and partly because it was not entirely customary in that era to run out game winning hits. The Cubs second baseman, Johnny Evers later claimed to have alertly retrieved the ball and tagged second base. By a strict interpretation of the rules, Merkle was forced out at second, and the game winning run nullified. Because of the pandemonium on the field, none of the umpires saw Evers make the play. Since an official protest was registered, the League ordered the game replayed at the end of the season only if it was necessary. It turned out that it was necessary when the Cubs and Giants ended the regular season tied for first place. The Cubs won the replayed game and then went on to win the League pennant and then the World Series. The Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series since.
Even though it wasnt brought to the medias and publics attention until 1920, no article on the Dead Ball Era would be complete without mentioning The White Sox of 1919, or as they have become widely known: the Black Sox. Many of the White Sox players felt they were underpaid. This was in light of a new trend where owners in both leagues offered the best players much higher salaries than they had been previously paid. At the same time, White Sox Owner Charlie Comiskey felt cutting costs was the best response to a poor showing by his team in 1918. As a result, a conspiracy ensued by eight of the starting White Sox players to throw the World Series.
Many observers of the series suspected this was the case and a long running controversy eventually led to a Grand Jury investigation. Eddie Cicotte was the first to come forward and admit his part in the conspiracy, followed by Joe Jackson. All eight of the Black Sox were suspended from baseball. Even though there was no law against conspiring to throw baseball games, and all 8 players were eventually acquitted, they were all ruled permanently ineligible.
