Id like to say there was some other explanation, but Ive come to realize better. Here it istwo days before the start of the Division I college football season and Im starting to get excited about the prospects of my South Carolina Gamecocks. I think this qualifies me as mentally ill, doesnt it?
I mean, seriously, lets look at the facts. I have been a Carolina fan since birth. During that time, they have managed to compile a record of 204-199-5. Wowt quite blow your socks off, does it?
Every year we USC fans hear things about how practices are going and how great players are doing and we get excited. I think the fact that this occurs every year should be a pretty strong argument against genetic memory and evolution.
In 1988, the greatest USC coach to date, Joe Morrisson, passed away. It was a sad time for USC fans. He was replaced by Sparky Woods (who?), who racked up an impressive 25-27-3 record. Sparky got fired and was replaced by Brad Scott, the offensive coordinator from Florida State (when they were good). This really was an exciting time. Expectations were high that he could transform the USC offense into something that could actually score. Well, five years later and a super duper record of 24-32-1 and he was fired and then hired by the hated evil orange empire, Clemson (expect a blog about idiot sports announcers who cant pronounce this schools name later in the season).
After Brad Scott was fired, things got crazy. Rumors starting sweeping around campus, school newspapers and Columbia radio stations of Lou Holtz sightings around town. He started showing up in town giving motivational speeches and before anyone else in the country was talking about it, we were finally going to have a REAL head coach! A year later, we were 0-11 and wondering if this was such a good idea. Of course, another year later we were celebrating a victory over Ohio State in the Outback Bowl. Lou ran up a record of 33-37 and decided it was time to retire. The last thing Lou did at USC was to recruit Steve Spurrier to be the next head coach at USC. As excited as we USC fans were at the prospect of old Lou coming to USC, it was at a whole different level for Spurrier! Steve is just about to begin his 4th year and currently has a record of 21-16 at Carolina.
The last two years have been so exciting and so frustrating. USC seems to have an innate ability to squander opportunities for victory. We can be up on a better team late into a game and suddenly the players realize holy crap, were beating Florida and promptly forget how to play football. Last year was the most excited I have been by a USC team. We were 6-1 and ranked #8 in the country. Then we proceeded to lose, lose, lose, lose and lose again. Whats worse is that we arent always blown out. We play teams close and make some stupid mistakes and blow it. I think Id prefer it if we were blown outactually, we did that against Florida. I dont seem to recall liking that any better than the close losses.
Anywayshere it istime to start again and all I know as a USC fan is hope and disappointment. Eleven starters back on defenses pretty cool. A better offensive linewell, to be fair, it wouldnt take much to be an improvementso how excited should we be about that? A good running back. A couple of good receivers. Spurrier saying hes got his QBno flip flopping this year. Its hard not to be excited. The season of hope, the preseason is. Thursday night begins the precarious balance of hope, excitement and realism.
I work in an office with a Univ. of Florida fan and a Univ. of Georgia fan. Were all going to the USC vs. NC State game Thursday night. Of course, theyre talking trash already. Thats the only way to get there. If you are not there, its because you have not spent enough time with the racket hitting the ball from every possible angle.
Its virtually impossible to not get there, if you have completed the number of repetitions your individual talent reserve requires.
Just saying that Federer has more talent doesnt absolve you. Why? Because there are millions of talented individuals who are nowhere near the top of their field AND there are millions of talent deprived clowns who are at the top because of their work ethic.
You have so many examples amongst the tennis greats themselves like Connors, Lendl, Sampras etc. They would lose hands down against Federers talent, but their extreme desire to not lose, drove them to work that much harder to narrow the gap to even the playing field.
How about Nadal? You think he works hard? You bet!!!! Harder than anyone else on the tour? Sure. Harder than Federer? Absolutely. He has to, for he does not have that gift of talent.

Sen. Joe Biden, on the other hand, may be a rock star to foreign policy wonks, but before his selection as Obama's running mate, his popularity was never quite that frenzied.

But could his new partnership with Obama transform Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. into Joe Cool?

This is, after all, the same man who has been a punch line at times.

His intriguing hairline has regularly been the butt of jokes. He was mocked on "Saturday Night Live" in 1991 as they lampooned the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, over which Biden presided.

And even his most recent appearances last week have found Delaware's senior senator wearing aviator glasses -- a look that was super-hip when Maverick and Iceman were roaming the deck of an aircraft carrier in "Top Gun" in 1986.

But, wait, Brad Pitt's been spotted wearing aviator sunglasses. (That's pretty cool.)

And the perpetually tanned senator sometimes drives a Corvette convertible, has a big, Hollywood smile with sparkling white teeth, sports a tasteful wardrobe and has become a household name thanks to his 36 years on Capitol Hill.

Biden, already a favorite on ultra-hip TV programs like "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" (remember the grilling Joe got on his "clean" and "articulate" comments?) is now a major figure on the cultural landscape, unlike any other point in his career.

This past week alone, Biden was mentioned twice on the popular celebrity gossip site perezhilton.com as speculation built that he was the front runner as Obama's choice as his vice presidential candidate, sandwiched between hard-hitting reports about Shia LaBeouf and Madonna.

But even before he was picked, Biden had his share of young followers who saw him as one hip 65-year-old.

On Facebook, 18-year-old Karen Kennedy, a college freshman from Georgia, is the administrator of the "Joe Biden is a pimp!" group, a tongue-in-cheek fan site that idolizes the six-term senator.

It started as an inside joke between Kennedy and her sister, noting Biden's penchant for driving in black SUVs and wearing suave suits.

"Biden is living the thug life," Kennedy wrote, using irony to mesh Biden's somewhat traditional image with that of someone with massive street cred.

In her eyes, Biden actually has more charisma than Obama.

"He sort of demands your attention," said Kennedy, who only gave Obama her support once she heard he selected Biden. "And his witty sense of humor and dry sarcasm is really appealing."

"Grouchy" Greg Watkins, the founder and co-CEO of the popular hip-hop site Allhiphop.com, agrees that Biden is a "pimp," slang these days for someone who is admirable.

"I'm looking at photos of him right now from 1977, and he looks so cool," said Watkins, of Newark, who has photos of himself rubbing shoulders with the likes of 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Ice-T on his Myspace page. "I really can't stress enough how cool this is for him and for Delaware."

For Watkins, Biden's flashy looks, his sure-to-be-impressive Rolodex and his clout on the world stage mean he has more in common with rappers than he probably thinks.

"I mean, he's overseas talking to some of the biggest gangstas in the world!" Watkins joked.

Michael D'Armi, a member of the College Democrats at the University of Delaware, put Biden's draw into simple terms: "He's a very hip guy, even if he's 65."

"I actually envision him going on the show," Matthews said. "As serious as he is, he sets himself up for great parody. And he can take it. He has a good sense of humor."

The button calls, blinds fold, one of the two limpers calls, and we're ready for a flop:

The limper checks to you. You look at the board. Could well be a blank flop, but you wouldn't put it past the button to be playing something silly like A7 or J8. He's been raising from the button all night and clearly loves having position. If you check to him, there's a 95% chance he'll bet at it whether or not he's got anything. You need more information than that - and nothing buys information like money.

The pot is an even $50, so you decide a half-pot bet of $25 is the way to go... Once again, you want to be aggressive enough to get the information you're looking for without putting too much into the pot. Too small of a bet and their call won't tell you anything. Too large of a bet and you're risking too much without a made hand.

The button calls. The limper folds. At this point, because the button's not a complete idiot, you can guess he's got one of three things: a halway decent draw (like 9T), a semi-made hand (middle pair, weak top pair, etc), or he's hit something big and is giving you just enough rope to hang yourself.

Now for the turn:

The plot thickens. One of the potential straight draws hit. If the button was playing something like J8, like you thought he might be, that's two pair and takes away some of your outs. On the other hand, there are two clubs on the board now and you've got a draw to the nut flush.

The pot is $100. You bet $40 to keep the pressure on without investing too much of your stack. You've invested $80 of your $200 now. The button has you covered.

After some thought, he calls. Don't read too much into the hesitation, just go on the information you've garnered from the bets. It's becoming less and less likely he's got a semi-made hand. It's getting a little expensive for that now. Maybe he's still on a draw. If he has a straight, a set, or two pair, it's extremely risky of him to simply call you here and risk the flush coming out... Especially since he's been aggressive all night, you would suspect he would take the opportunity to raise you and try to take the pot now.

But, regardless, it's time for the river:

There's your nut flush. The hand is probably yours, but keep your eyes open. The paired board means he could have hit something bigger here - if he was willing to risk the flush draw with his set or two pair.

You weigh your options. The pot is $180 and you've got $120 left. Any reasonable bet and you're committed. But... Maybe shoving still isn't the best option. If he's missed the lower end of the straight draw or something else silly, he might be coaxed into a mistake by a smaller bet... If he's got you, there's not a ton you can do about that, but you really think he would have bet on the turn with anything that could beat you now.

You bet $60 into the $180 pot. It's a fairly small bet, so he might call it with something questionable (like trip 2s) or even shove because he thinks your river bet shows weakness. At the very least, he's unlikely to lay it down for $60 more.

He shoves. You'd already predetermined your call.

He shows 8Tc. He'd flopped a questionable top pair, turned the flush draw, and rivered a weaker flush. You double up. (If you hadn't had the guts to put a bet out on the flop, he would have bet the pair and you would have had to lay it down with insufficient information.)

Okay, I hear you saying it in your head... It's easy to set up a fictional hand and knock down an imaginary opponent. Yes, that's true, but you'd be surprised how often situations like that occur. You could have hit a higher pair or any number of better hands... But the important thing is, you had the courage to put some chips out there, wisely, to fish for information.

Yeah, you say, but that's an easy strategy to defeat... All he had to do was reraise me and I'd have to bail, giving him those chips for free because I bet without a hand.

Well, yes, that does happen... But that brings us to the second part of the "Feeler Bet" strategy. When you hit something big, put out a feeler bet. It helps to build the pot and DOESN'T give them much information - because you use this bet to control pot size (more on that at a later date), feel for information, AND to entice a raise.

For example:

One last thing as I wrap up... As you know, events unfolding exactly as I've written them above is rare. Often you'll take the pot with your post-flop bet, given it's a fairly blank flop and fairly likely no one hit anything worth calling. Sometimes you'll get reraised and you'll have to bite the bullet and lay it down. But if you utilize this strategy correctly, it should do well for you in the long run.

With this advice in mind, we decided to start potty training yesterday. I know there a bagillion different ways to go about it, but we decided to do a small scale big boy party first thing yesterday morning and also, from the time he got out of bed, he wore underwear (except at naps and night, when he will use a Pull Up). We talked it up all week and he seemed into it. So at six thirty yesterday morning, I got him up and took off his diaper. He had a small breakdown when I asked which underwear he wanted to wear but it was short lived and he choose Wiggles. We had donuts, got potty gifts and busted out the M Ms. I sat back and waited for the bevy of accidents I thought were sure to occur.

But here's the thing--there WERE NOT a lot of accidents. He had one yesterday morning and it made him quite upset. I told him it was not a big deal, cleaned him up and we went on with our morning. I reminded him every thirty minutes or so to try to go to the potty, but he also decided to try to go on his own sometimes. When he ran in yesterday and did number two in the potty, I teared up, I was so happy and relieved that he was able to do it! He liked the underwear so much that he wanted to wear them during nap time. I didn't want to push the Pull Up issue but a wet bed after nap time made him rethink his stance. The rest of the day, we had what I will call 1/2 an accident as he started to have an accident but finished up in the potty. Last night, when he went to bed, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

My mother, when I told her this, was happy about the news but also cautioned that today may not go as well. However, it's been even better. He got up this morning with a dry Pull Up. As I type this, there have been no accidents and he's been going to the potty pretty much unprompted. Infused with a new confidence, I took him to Target this morning IN UNDERWEAR (I had back up underwear and clothes in the car, of course). We ended up going to Babies R Us and Toys R Us, too. I've got 5 easy and proven tips for you to implement immediately that will shave 4-6 or even more strokes off your score the next time you play. Give them a try and see what happens, but now I am only to include the first two:-

Here they are:

1) First off you've got to put the proper fuel in your body before you leave home. I mean eat something not too heavy that gives you enough energy. Most golfers don't give it a second thought.

They either don't eat at all before they leave home or they eat something that is not going to give them the long-term energy they're hoping for.

So whether it's lunch or breakfast before you leave you need to consume a complex carbohydrate and a good protein source.

This combination will warrant the best use of your energy for the long haul.

An example for breakfast would be a bowl of oatmeal and a couple of eggs with a piece of fruit or a juice.

For lunch you could have a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with a piece of fruit. Lot's of lettuce on the sandwich and try to avoid mayonnaise or butter.

2) The second tip is to properly warm up your body before you even hit your first ball. I see so many golfers show up 5 minutes before tee time, hack a few balls and head to the first tee.

I mean doing some simple stretching exercise before injure your hamstring.

Those golfers are headed for a double bogey right off the bat - but hey they're just getting "warmed up" right?

A better approach is to give yourself at least 30 minutes before your tee time.

First do some dynamic (movement oriented) stretches to prepare your body to perform.

Things like arm circles, partial squats, toe touches, etc. Then take some half swings with a 7-pound iron club.

Now after that you're ready to hit some wedges. You'll find with this approach your hits on the range will be much better, which will build your confidence.

3) Drink lots of water even before you leave your house. Try to consume up to a gallon of water before you get to the course.

This will help you absorb and digest your pre-game meal and hydrate your muscles for optimal performance. This is important and should not be overlook, otherwise the consequences is adverse.

Don't take this lightly. Dehydration causes energy loss, lack of focus and concentration and fatigue later in the round.

And remember, that's before you even come to the course. Once you get there, you should be drinking water every hole. Don't forget about it.

4) Don't wait till you get tight to stretch on the course. You should be constantly moving your body and stretching your joints while you play.

I see and hear too many golfers complaining of tight lower backs or shoulders during the round.

What amazes me is that with all that complaining they do nothing about it. Why? Think of your body as a machine.

If the machine starts to break down - fix it. I mean stretch those areas while you're playing. You'll see a big difference in your swing mechanics late in the round.

5) Snack while you play. No I don't mean the full meal but having mini snacks bar that most people taking before heading for the gym.

When you supply your body with the proper nutrients your energy levels stay balanced and you will avoid those mental lapses late in the round.

How many times have you had a good score only to blow up late in the round? I'll bet more than a couple of times. I know I have. Treat your body like a Ferrari not a Ford Pinto. You only 1 body if you want to win.

Man we are excited for the NCAA football 2008-2009 season. We are going to hit you up with this post on some pre-season observations like What Vegas is trying to tell you and Where Vegas is trying to trap you and we are going to analyze some of the best teams and players in the country to let you know what we are thinking and to inject some of our own predictions and analysis.
We are here to provide you with full disclosure on what we are up to. Two years ago, RPJ Syndicate went 19-4 against the spread during bowl season and we made ourselves a ton of money. Last year we started this blog and started posting our picks to the public with the idea of continuing with our momentum so we could ultimately charge for our services. Well a funny thing happend on the way to the bank last season.we finished the regular season 59-54 and finished up 13 betting units. Well I do not know about you but this record was not worth paying for and we are back again this season posting our picks for free. We were up 13 units because we went 6-4 for our 5 unit bets. So there you have it. We will tell you why we are picking certain games and our MONEY IS 100% behind every recommendation we make so we feel the pain and share the gain. The USC Gamecocks, ASU, Alabama, Tennessee stretch is brutal and then they still play at LSU, followed up with a game against Florida and still have to travel to Auburn. We see 3 loses out of this squad. In addition, Mark Richt is not controlling this team in the offseason and the players are clearly not focused on winning championships. USC and Ohio State are at the top of the list with an over/under of 10.5. That means in order to win this bet each team needs to lose only one game all year. These teams play in LA on September 13 so one of them will have a loss 2 or 3 games into their season. This is really the only game each team needs to worry about and the winner will likely play in the BCS title game. Outside of travelling to LA, Ohio States two scariest games are at Wisconsin and at Illinois. The Buckeyes get Penn State and Michigan at home and the rest of the Big Ten stinks. USC gets Ohio State at home along with Oregon, ASU and Cal. Just like back in 2004, if USC can get past a tough early schedule game (Ohio State this year and Va. Tech in 2004), their schedule lines up perfectly for an undefeated run.
The focus of college football teams really needs to focus on the QB position. The conference with the best QBs in the nation play in the Big 12. Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri, Kansas, even Colorado are going to play with QBs that are going to play on Sundays. Do not be surprised to see the winner of the Big 12 playing in the BCS title game.
The other QBs to watch include Sanchez, Tebow and Pat White. If Sanchez is healthy, the Trojans have a shot at playing in the title game and never disount Tim Tebow, the best QB in the SEC. The best QB in the Big East plays for West Virginia and these guys might have a shot at sneaking through the season undefeated. White and Devine are going to be nasty.
This stuff is not rocket science. Pollsters should really look at shcedule when deciding their pre-season rankings but when they do not, Vegas knows what to do and tells us publically. No Georgia, yes to Florida. PAc-10 and Big-10 are not competitive cause they expect USC and Ohio State to only have one loss and one will be to each other. The Big 12 will be scrappy up top with Oklahoma and Missouri. Clemson will choke once again and BYU will not get to the BCS game cause Boise State is still the cream of the crop.
