Orel Hershiser is a well respected ex major league pitcher. He experienced tremendous success as the ace of the Los Angeles Dodgers for many years.

Now, he is making a name for himself in the world of poker. Hershiser was an entrant in the 2008 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship in Las Vegas.

He was nicknamed "The Bulldog" while playing in his major league career. He now may take that name with him into the poker world.

Hershiser has joined seven others in the quarter finals of the tournament being held at Caesar's in Las Vegas. On his way, he has knocked out some big players in the professional poker universe. Allen Cunningham, Freddy Deeb, and Ted Forrest have all been taken out of the tournament by Hershiser so far.

The road will not get easier. To win the title, Hershiser will have to continue beating some of the best in the world. Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Huck Seed, Jonathon Little, David Benyamine, and Andy Bloch, who will be his next opponent.

Rep. George Miller (D-CA) has signed on to be a cosponsor of Rep. Barney Franks (D-MA) Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act. The IGREA is a response to the Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act, which bans financial institutions from processing payments to online gambling companies. The IGREA is attempting to allow online gambling companies to operate legally in the United States, but under regulation, with online gambling companies required to have a license to operate in the U.S.
Rep. Miller is now the forty-sixth cosponsor of the bill, and is the ninth cosponsor to hail from California. Miller has been in Congress since 1975, representing Californias seventh congressional district. George Miller is currently the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee.
The IGREA is not the only gambling bill currently going through congress, as their is currently another bill in the house similar in nature to the IGREA, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, introduced by Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA). There is also a bill introduced whose intent is to exclude poker from the UIGEA because it is a game of skill, as well as a bill whose intent is to conduct a study to see what the U.S. should do with online gambling. However, the IGREA is the most well-known of the online gambling bills, has collected the most cosponsors, and seems the most likeliest to become law.

Balancing Life/Poker and Current times

How do you balance poker and life? This topic comes up so often with poker players, I see posts on forums regarding how much time to spend playing. Also things like the games are best on the weekends, but I hate missing time to spend with my friends and go out. If you are not interested in this and just in what is going on in my life now you can scroll down some.
It's a real tough thing to deal with if you are a successful player. Right now I am playing in the mid-stakes limit games, so between 8/16-15/30 are my main games, occasionally some mixed shots at 30/60 when the games are good. On my average day I would estimate I am making about $300. However, on the weekends the games are full of many more fish and I would guess I am making close to $500/day.
So is it worth the extra $200 to stay in for a night and pass up spending time with friends? How much does that money mean to you? How much do your friends mean to you? Being a college student, it is very nice to have the money to do what I want, and not have many worries.
The answer to this question is very gray for most people, it can really depend on what is most important in your own life. For myself the answer is easy. I want to savor all the time I have at Penn State, I want to make friendships that will stay with me for my whole life. So for me the answer is simple, I play poker whenever I have free time and nothing is going on. I make sure I get my school work done first and keep my grades going strong. I also never play when I have the chance to go and hang out with friends. A quote I really like from Doyle Brunson that I cannot recall exactly, "If you have anything else that you would rather be doing, then don't sit down at a table."
In all, I enjoy playing/learning the game. I would like nothing more than to keep progressing and make lots of money and become one of the better players in the game. And with hard work I can achieve that, it may take a little longer if I don't spend all my time trying to achieve it, but that is fine with me. My friends, family, and life are more important to me than the money.
Whats going on in my life now?
Some of my best friends came up for the weekend to celebrate State Patty's Day and my friend Jeff's 22nd birthday. I always have a real fun time when anyone visits, especially because I don't get to see them that much. I am also taking an internship in Charlotte, NC this summer so I will miss everyone alot so I want to spend as much time hanging with them now as I can. Back to State Patty's Day, it is more or less a made up Penn State day where we push Saint Patty's Day to whatever day suits the students best to party all day long and have a sick time. So it got moved to this past Saturday, needless to say I had an awesome time. I went strong all day and lasted all night (that's what she said), and didn't pass out at all like some of my friends which I will let remain anonymous.
Spring Break 08' in Cancun is on the horizon, coming up this next Sunday. The time is going by slow as it is approaching since I check out weather.com every day to see the temperature always hovering about 60 degrees warmer than Penn State. It should be the trip of a life time going with 11 real good friends. I will post some pics/trip report when I get back. For now good luck at the tables.

What do Dr. Vic Fey, an obstetrician from Clinton, Oklahoma, and Erick Brenes, a farmer from Costa Rica have in common? They both made it to the final table of The World Poker Tour's Aruba Poker Classic. And what makes it more remarkable is they won their $6,000 buy-in and the trip to Aruba by playing a $27 satellite tournament at the online poker room, Ultimate Bet. Neither of these men are professional poker players but at the end of the tournament Vic Fey finished in 6th place and won $105,000 and Erick Brenes finished in first and went home to Costa Rica $1,417,000 richer. Not bad for a $27 investment.
What are satellites and how do they work? Basically a satellite is a way to enter a major tournament and play for big money without having to pay the large buy-in required. For example, the buy-in for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is $10,000. An on-line poker room could sponser a tournament with a $1,350 buy-in (they will also charge somewhere around 9-10% for a registration fee). For every 10 players in the tournament there would be a prize pool of $13,500, enough for the single buy-in to the WSOP and some extra for spending money. So for a $1,350 you could win your entry to the major tournament. If there are 100 players then the players who finish in one of the top 10 positions would be on their way to Las Vegas and a chance at $10,000,000, the estimated top prize in this years tournament.
A thousand dollars is still a little steep if you ask me but you're dying to play in the WSOP. So you go to an online poker site like Royal Vegas Poker. There, they have a way for you to make it to the World Series for as little as $1. It takes six steps and works like this:
Step 1: You pay a $1 buy-in and a $.10 registration fee. You play against ten other players. If you come in first or second you've made it to step two.
Step 2: You enter this tournament by either coming in first or second in step 1 or by directly buying in for $5 + $0.50. Come in first or second and you move on to step three. Come in third and you get to play level 2 again free.
Step 3: Same deal. Enter by placing 1st or 2nd in the previous step or buy-in for $22.50 + $2.25. The final 2 players get free entry to step four and third place lets you repeat step 3 and pays you $2.75.
Step 4: The buy-in for this level is $100 + $10. Come in first or second and go to step 5. Come in third and play step 4 over again.
Step 5: If you happen to have $450 + $45 you can buy-in to this level. If you've were lucky enough to come in 1st or 2nd the previous step, it costs you nothing. The first two finishers go to the final step, third place gets to play step 5 again.
Step 6: You've made it to the final step. Of course you can just cough up the $1,350 + $135 to play in this game or you might have gotten here all the way from step one for $1. In either case, finish 1st in this ten player table and you're on your way to the WSOP. Come in 2nd and you win $1,000.
This is just one example of an on-line poker site's roadmap to the WSOP. At FullTilt poker you can get there for as little as $4. And they have a promotion in which if you gain entry to the tournament through their site and win the $10 Million at the WSOP, they will match it with an additional $10 Million.
Party Poker has satellites starting at $9,InterPoker can get you there for $10, and UltimateBet has games for as little as $3.
There are even some sites where you can gain entry through freerolls (tournaments with no entry fees).
There are all sorts of tournaments like this at many different online poker sites and they all follow the same basic pattern. You buy-in at a low level to win entry into a higher level tournament. I narrowly missed making it to the PartyPoker millions tournament with a $10,000 buy-in and a prize pool of $7.5 Million. For $6 I worked my way up to the finals where I needed to come in one of the top 4 positions. Unfortunately I finished 9th, but there's always next year. And boy, did I get a lot of entertainment and excitement for my $6.
So if you're looking to be the next poker star and you don't want to put down $10,000 to get in the game, check out the different online sites and see if you can turn $1 into a million.
